Athens Airport has staffed luggage storage operated by Care4Bag in the public arrivals area, beside Exit 1. It is useful for an airport-to-airport stopover or for leaving a large suitcase while travelling elsewhere. For a final sightseeing day after checking out downtown, city storage usually avoids an unnecessary airport detour. [1]
Where the airport storage is - and who can use it
The important word is public. This is not a locker inside a departure lounge or a service reserved for passengers of a particular airline. An arriving passenger can collect checked luggage, leave the restricted arrivals area and take it to the storage counter. A departing passenger can retrieve a bag before proceeding to airline check-in. The airport lists the service as operating around the clock. [1]
That arrangement also explains its limitation for connecting passengers. A suitcase checked through to your final destination normally remains within the airline's baggage system; it is not something you can simply take to this counter between flights. Conversely, reaching public arrivals may require completing the entry procedures applicable to your itinerary. Storage does not create permission to enter Greece or remove the time needed to return through security.
Treat the counter as a separate stop in your travel plan, not as part of airline check-in. Keep your booking reference and storage receipt somewhere accessible, and photograph the receipt as a backup. Before handing anything over, remove the passport, tickets, payment cards, essential personal items and the clothing you expect to use while the bag is stored. These are practical precautions, rather than additional conditions imposed by the operator.
The published prices through December 2026
Care4Bag's tariff explicitly states that these prices are valid until 31 December 2026. Size determines the category; an airline calling a bag "cabin baggage" does not automatically place it in the smallest storage band. [2]
| Storage period | Small: up to 50 × 30 × 20 cm | Medium: up to 65 × 50 × 25 cm | Large: up to 90 × 40 × 40 cm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 6 hours | €8 | €10 | €12 |
| Up to 12 hours | €10 | €12 | €14 |
| Up to 24 hours | €12 | €15 | €18 |
| Up to 48 hours | €15 | €19 | €23 |
| 7 days | €30 | €39 | €48 |
These are per-piece storage charges, not a group allowance. The operator also publishes longer-duration bands and a separate rate for special items, subject to available space. Ask how an unusually shaped case will be classified before depositing it. Payment is made when collecting the luggage. [2]
A simple example shows why size and collection time matter. Two medium suitcases stored for up to six hours cost €20 altogether; the same two bags in the twelve-hour band cost €24. Those totals are calculated from the published tariff. A cheaper headline price for one small bag is therefore not a useful comparison for a couple carrying two larger cases.
Build some margin into your expected collection time. A return train or a late lunch can move you into the next band. There is no need to overcomplicate the decision: compare the likely band with the following one, rather than planning a city visit around collecting a suitcase a few minutes before a price threshold.
When airport storage is the better choice
Leaving luggage at the airport makes particular sense when both ends of the storage period are airport journeys. For example, someone arriving in Athens, taking a short side trip and returning to catch an international flight may prefer to travel with a smaller bag between those flights. The published multiday rates let that traveller compare one week of storage with the inconvenience and any transport costs of carrying everything. [2]
It can also work for a long layover with luggage that has not been checked through. However, storage is only one part of the decision to leave the airport. Allow for arrival formalities, reaching the counter, travel into Athens, the return journey, collection and the airline's check-in or boarding requirements. A nominal eight-hour connection does not provide eight hours of sightseeing.
Airport storage is less persuasive when your day begins in central Athens. Taking a suitcase out to the airport, returning downtown and then travelling to the airport again uses both time and transport money. Unless you have another reason to visit the terminal early, leaving the case near your hotel or your final city stop is the cleaner arrangement.
The airport's public-transport page lists the metro and express buses serving the city. Use the appropriate service for your accommodation and departure time, but do not treat a published journey estimate as a guaranteed arrival time at the storage counter. [3]
Downtown storage and collection services
The city's official tourism guide lists central lockers and staffed storage businesses, as well as a luggage collection-and-delivery service. These are different products: a locker requires you to return to it, while a delivery arrangement needs an agreed pickup point, destination and delivery window. [4]
For a hotel checkout day, first ask whether your accommodation will hold the bag until departure. Then compare a nearby commercial location on three practical points: its actual opening hours, the dimensions it accepts and how far it takes you from the route to the airport. A storage location that is cheap but closes before dinner may be the wrong bargain.
Delivery can be useful when your arrival and departure points differ, such as a hotel-to-airport or port-to-airport journey. Do not compare a storage-only advertised starting price with a complete collection-and-delivery quote. Request a total covering every bag and the exact transfer, and leave enough time to resolve a missed handover before your flight.
For independent lockers, consider whether all your luggage fits in one compartment. "Per locker" can be economical for several small bags, whereas a large suitcase may need its own space. The relevant comparison is the total for your belongings and duration, not whichever business advertises the lowest single number.
What not to confuse with luggage storage
Care4Bag also offers wrapping, but wrapping and storage are separate services with different published arrangements. A wrapped suitcase is not automatically stored, and storage does not mean that the case will be delivered to your airline. The operator's site describes baggage screening and surveillance at its storage facility. [5]
Its tariff conditions exclude food and pets and specify that valuables or fragile contents should be declared. Special equipment needs advance discussion rather than an assumption that the ordinary large-suitcase price applies. Keep anything you would be unwilling to leave unattended with you, even when using a staffed service. [2]
On collection day, retrieve the luggage before joining a check-in queue. Allow time to open the bag and reorganise anything needed for security or the flight. The most convenient storage choice is ultimately the one that lets you finish sightseeing and reach your departure without doubling back - not necessarily the one with the cheapest six-hour rate.
